After a failed attempt to deal aging slugger Carlos Lee to the Dodgers, the Astros have dealt their first baseman to the Miami Marlins, in exchange for prospects Matt Dominguez and Rob Rasmussen. Houston will also send about $8.8 million to Miami, who will only owe Lee $200,000.
Lee, 36, is in the last year of his six-year, $100 million contract and should be a significant upgrade over incumbent first baseman Gaby Sanchez. Sanchez has struggled all season long, hitting just .194/.240/.283 in 192 plate appearances and has posted a negative win total, at -0.3 fWAR.
Lee’s no longer the player he was in his prime – his power has been declining for several seasons – but has still managed to be an above-average offensive player. His total production, according to Weighted Runs Created Plus, has been four-percent better than the league average. A solid defender…
