A few minutes ago I received a text from ESPN saying that the Miami Marlins traded Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for Jacob Turner. It’s not a horrible trade, but I don’t think it was the right choice for Detroit.
Anibal Sanchez is a good, underrated pitcher. The past two years he has thrown a combined 386 innings and his FIP each season was below 3.50. This year his FIP sits at 3.40 and he has accumulated a 2.4 fWAR thus far. He’s owed $2.66mil the rest of the way and will probably produce at least another win above replacement. So he gives them a few million dollars in surplus. However, he’s a free agent at the end of the year so the Tigers will only have him for a couple months.
Anibal Sanchez is an upgrade. But not by much. All their starters are above…
